Glenaeon students outdoor learning

Challenge, Nature and Experience

Glenaeon’s Outdoor Education program is one of our flagship programs, supporting students to develop resilience, independence, and a deep connection to the natural world.

Through carefully structured experiences, students learn to work alongside others, overcome adversity, and step confidently beyond their comfort zones.

Outdoor Education at Glenaeon begins in the early years with local bush-walking explorations, gradually progressing to challenging, expedition based experiences that culminate in significant journey based programs in the senior years.

A Developmental Approach

The formal Outdoor Education program starts in Class 4 and is designed for students from approximately nine years of age through to Year 12.

Each stage builds physical capability, environmental awareness, teamwork, and self‑reliance, equipping students with the skills and confidence to engage safely and meaningfully with the outdoors.

Experiences are intentionally age‑appropriate and cumulative, ensuring that by the senior years students are prepared, both practically and emotionally, for extended, self‑directed journeys in remote environments.

From Our Backyard to World‑Heritage Landscapes

Outdoor Education at Glenaeon begins close to home, making use of Middle Cove’s bushland and nature reserves. From there, students progressively journey further afield, experiencing diverse Australian landscapes including World Heritage regions in New South Wales, Tasmania, and Central Australia.

All programs are expedition‑based, with conservation, wilderness appreciation, and environmental responsibility at their core. These journeys foster a sense of respect for place, an understanding of ecological systems, and a lived experience of interdependence between people and the natural world.

Signature Experiences

While programs evolve over time, key experiences within the Outdoor Education journey include:

  • Progressive walking programs beginning in the primary years
  • Extended bushwalking expeditions throughout Middle School involving earth stewardship, kayaking, canoeing and abseiling.
  • Year 10:
A major expedition on Tasmania’s Overland Track, marking an important rite of passage
  • Year 11:
An expedition to Australia’s indigenous heart, and in line with the First Nations Main Lesson, students walk sections of the Larapinta Trail in Central Australia
  • Year 12:
A five‑day adventure, including approximately 48 hours spent alone in the wilderness, fully self‑sufficient

The Year 12 Solo Camp is the culminating experience of the Active Wilderness Program. It invites students into stillness, reflection, and independence, drawing together years of practical learning, emotional growth, and personal insight. This experience develops confidence, self‑trust, and resourcefulness, qualities that strongly support young adults as they step into life beyond school.

Unforgettable, Life‑Shaping Experiences

Guided by the Outdoor Education team, Glenaeon’s aim is to reshape students’ understanding of what a “school camp” can be, moving from something expected to something deeply memorable, and often life‑changing.

Students are encouraged to sleep under the stars, attend closely to the natural world, and test their own limits with care and support. Through these experiences, young people develop resilience, perspective, and a sense of connection that extends beyond the classroom.

Education for Meaningful Lives

Glenaeon’s Outdoor Education program reflects the school’s commitment to educating the whole young person: head, heart, and hands.

These experiences nurture independence and courage, strengthen community, and invite students to engage with the world respectfully and purposefully.

Through time spent walking, reflecting, and working together in nature, students build capacities that prepare them not only for future study and work, but for meaningful, grounded participation in life.
