Preschool

A Home Away from Home

The preschool is a place that emulates the home so the children learn in an environment that meets the needs of the young child gently and with support.  The large rooms are divided into small spaces.  Small spaces with a big purpose!  Young children learn primarily through imitation and we strive to provide activities that are worthy of imitation through which skills necessary for the children’s journey through the school and through life are built.

Each day the children play creatively both indoors and out, unfolding imaginative journeys often inspired by the stories the teachers share each day.  Repetition is an important aspect of education for the young child.  The same story, movement activities, finger plays and songs will be told or practiced for several weeks.  Contrary to the contemporary view this is anything but ‘boring’ for the children.  Young children really require repetition in order to build up their memories and body movement; more to the point, they love it!

Our teachers lead the children in baking, felting, painting and games.  These activities stimulate the building of brain pathways through use of the hands and in particular the fingers in a pincer grip.  The mood is calm and nurturing with imagination a key ingredient to every action in the day.
