Play Groups & Preschool

Young children learn through doing or imitating the activities of the adults around them.  Before they start Kindergarten we have two places for young children at Glenaeon.

PARENT CHILD GROUPS

There are three different groups that meet weekly for, see our fee structure for times days and cost:
  1. Children aged 2-3 years and their parents together
  2. Children aged 3-5 years separate from their parents
  3. Babies and children under 2 and their parents together
The first group is for children and parents/carers together for 2 hours once a week.  The group gently follows the seasons of the year, engaging in circle activities, shared morning tea, listening to stories and outdoor play.  Parents have time to connect with each other during the outdoor playtime and learn new skills from each other and our experienced staff for nurturing their young children at home.

The three to five year olds happily separate from their parents for the 2 hour session and continue the experiences described above, while the parents/carers gather in a nearby room to share stories and fine company, while discussing aspects of child development and the challenges of 21st Century parenting.  Again, there is a weekly rhythm to the meeting times.

For parents with babies and children under two, we have two groups meeting on alternate Friday mornings.  Every other week parents meet for 90 minutes with their babies and young children to discuss the joys and struggles of parenting and engage the children in simple activities.  One group meets 5 times each term and the second group meets 4 times.

PRESCHOOL

Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner Preschool is a licensed Long Day Care Centre open from 8:30am-5:30pm, 48 weeks per year, closing for four weeks in December-January.  The core programme is from 9am - 3pm daily with aftercare and holiday care available. Please see our fee structure for daily rates.

The preschool caters for children 3-5 years in either 2-day, or 3-day groups.  Children will ideally turn 3 by 1 January of their first year in order to join the preschool. It is a small, caring community that works in partnership with parents to support the healthy unfolding of their children’s overall development and help foster social skills such as cooperation, empathy and intuition.

Preschool is an extension of the home environment.  It is a warm, protective space where the children are stimulated by creative play, story telling, singing, baking, painting and colour.

Toys and materials in the preschool are simple and natural allowing individual imagination to determine the use of the object.  For example; coloured cloths are in a basket, the children turn them into capes, babies’ blankets, princess veils, an ocean, a cubby; in fact, whatever the children want it to be. Creative play is the way the growing child learns and proceses his or her experience of the world.

“The whole point of a preschool is to give young children the opportunity to imitate life in a simple and wholesome way.”

Seasonal festivals are important times of the preschool year as they foster a meaningful connection with nature’s cycles.  They become central points of celebration for our preschool families as well.

During the first 6-7 years of a child’s life the physical body is developing, and this is to be respected.  Pre-numeric and pre-literacy skills are imparted through creative play, singing, stories, dancing, painting, drawing, cooking, verses and gardening: a beautiful and healthy foundation for all later learning.
