2016 was the year that the Glenaeon Eco Council established solar power generation at the Castlecrag Campus of Glenaeon. It has been a wonderful feeling during the hottest summer on record to be powering our air conditioners so efficiently by the heat of the sun. We still exceed our power output when it gets very hot. For example, on Friday February 10, we produced 115 kWh from our solar panels but consumed a massive 196 kWh with all our air conditioners set at 24 degrees Celsius.
On an average day however, we produce around 80 kWh and use approximately 40 of those. As we do not yet have batteries, we are still importing energy from the grid (for our security lights at night) but we are also transferring all our excess power to the grid for other consumers. This has contributed to a carbon offset of 1.6 tons for this month which is the equivalent of 42 trees!
