Each year we continue the tradition of the Shepherds Play as a community and non-denominational celebration of the Christmas festival. The play has its origins in the York cycle of Mystery plays from the Middle Ages, so we are continuing a very long tradition. Local people, not professional actors, shared the Christmas spirit by acting out, in simple costumes, the nativity story, balanced by some very earthy characters in the shepherds. They visit the manger in the stable after the visitation from the heavenly messengers, played as always by Year 11 students. The story beautifully captures the moment that was the first Christmas when something sacred broke through into earthly events.

This year we have enjoyed another community performance and our special thank you’s go to

Liz Chan for directing, casting, set building and ironing the play into existence;
all the players who gave the time to preparing and rehearsing the play;
the singers who prepared and rehearsed the songs, led by Manu;
Alumni Will Hoffmann and Ben Collett who joined us to support the singing;
All the parents who came with the younger classes to support the teachers.
