Students from Years 9 and 10 'met with art' last week, attending both the Pop to Popism Exhibition at the NSW Art Gallery and the Art Express at the AGNSW. The Pop to Popism featured more than 200 works exploring the origins of pop art, its heady high period and its enduring legacy both in Australia and abroad. It included masterpieces such as Roy Lichtenstein’s first comic-style painting Look Mickey, Andy Warhol’s Triple Elvis and David Hockney’s Portrait of an artist. For the first time, Australian artists – including Martin Sharp, Howard Arkley, Brett Whiteley and Maria Kozic – were also showcased with their international peers. Being able to closely view such amazing work brought art to life and gave it context for our students. The Art Express was also an exciting exhibition for all, as it contained the work of Tom Sandberg, one of our HSC students from 2014.
The two trips have inspired our students to ponder on what their own future might hold as they continue in their study of Visual Arts.
