The Department of Education has brought in new regulations on attendance. In the past, families taking time off from school during term completed a Certificate of Exemption which indicated approved Leave.

In future families will be able to apply for a certificate of Leave which if approved, will then ensure the absence is marked as Leave on the student’s attendance record. If not approved, the absence will be marked as just that, as an Absence.

This information is a preview of the new arrangements, and we are waiting on the new templates for these certificates. Until they are available we will continue to use the current Certificate, as there is space on them to indicate whether the leave if approved or not.
The Association of Independent Schools of NSW has sent details of the new requirements, and the following is a direct quote from their message to the school:

The Minister for Education has approved changes to the use of the Attendance Register codes for 2015.  The changes implement the ACARA National Standards for Student Attendance Data Reporting. ACARA developed the National Standards to establish nationally consistent parameters for the collection and reporting of student attendance data.

Holidays
As part of the implementation of the National Standards, holidays taken by students outside of school vacation periods will now be included as Absences. A Certificate of Exemption can no longer be granted for this purpose.
Families  are encouraged  to  holiday  or  travel  during  school  vacations.  If  travel  during  school  term  is necessary the following considerations apply:

If the school accepts the reason for the absence, the absence will be granted as Leave.

If the school does not believe the absence is in the student’s best interests and does not accept the reason, the absence is unjustified and will be recorded as an Absence.

Leave
Schools can request the completion of an Application for Leave Form for holidays within the school term. The Department of Education and Communities  is  developing  templates  for  an  application  for  leave  and  a  certificate  of  extended  leave.  Once approved and distributed, these templates will be available for use by schools.
