On Friday 7th Nov our school received news from BOSTES ( The Board of Studies) that Thomas Sandberg’s HSC Body of Work Architypes has been Pre-selected for Artexpress 2015. To receive this nomination reveals the examiners acknowledgment of the exceptional quality of Tom’s work.
This year 9170 students undertook the HSC Visual Arts Course. Approximately ONLY 600 Body of Works are actually nominated for potential inclusion in ArtExpress where approximately 200 are chosen for the actual exhibition in a number of venues. These statistics reveal the extremely high level that Tom has achieved.
I always knew he would create a work in the expressive form of sculpture, but what exactly was revealed over many months of small intricate drawings and equally small marquettes. Architypes morphed out of those early experiments. Tom’s persistence and extreme attention to detail was a pre requisite for the success of this work. We await the final gong in early December.Quote from Tom’s artist’s statement from the showcase
“These sculptures are intended to show the development of architecture through history, from ancient times
through to the contemporary era. The idea partly arose from my forays into history in my
Rudolf Steiner education, as well as my study of Ancient History for the HSC. Each form is
an abstraction of an architectural archetype, becoming gradually less solid as time
progresses through the work. The stepped layers in the base indicate the passage of time
upwards, from antiquity to the present-day. In designing the piece, I attempted to sift out
the most fundamental element of each structure, such as the transference of weight in a
column, or the gridded nature of a high-rise building.”
