EARLY CHILDHOOD: Preschool & Kindergarten

Infants and young children are entirely given over to their physical surroundings; they absorb the world primarily through their senses and respond in the most active mode of knowing: imitation. Imitation is the power to identify oneself with one's immediate environment through one's active will.

The Kindergarten caters for 4, 5 and 6 year olds in an environment that allows the children to learn through imitation and with activities that highlight the creative and skillful and truth and beauty.

The rhythm of daily life at Steiner pre- to- school and kindergarten is simple and unhurried. Activities are carefully balanced throughout the morning and Creative play forms one of the main focuses of the day.

Children play at cooking, they dress up and become mothers and fathers, kings and queens; they sing, paint, and color. Through songs and poems they learn to enjoy language; they learn to play together, hear stories, see puppet shows, bake bread, make soup, model beeswax, and build houses out of boxes, sheets, and boards. We celebrate seasonal festivals to foster a meaningful connection with nature.

To become fully engaged in such work is the child's best preparation for life. It builds powers of concentration, interest, and a lifelong love of learning.

Our aim is to foster enthusiasm, joy and wonder for life in an environment of goodness, beauty and imagination. Kindergarten education is comprehensive and stimulating. It encourages our youngest children to be at ease with themselves and to be eager, creative and responsive when they begin their formal education in class one.
